Our Approach

Trauma Informed Care: Trauma-Informed Care is an organizational structure and treatment framework grounded in the understanding of, and responsiveness to, the impact of trauma and stress as a means to build resiliency within your organization.

To be acting as a trauma-informed organization, it is essential that leadership, management, and staff appropriately respond to each other, and their clientele, in a way that recognizes the effects of all types of trauma and stress.

This requires an organization to foundationally shift practices, communication, and infrastructure to create opportunities for staff and clientele to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment—resulting in a positive work environment.

We pull from several different TIC models including:

Trauma Informed Care 101

Trauma-informed care is a framework that can help support employees by building their knowledge about how to self-regulate, honor a client’s/service recipient’s experience, foster safe spaces for open/honest communication, and instill within them supportive and accessible knowledge to combat their own burnout. Having accessible knowledge about stress, trauma, and organizational resiliency supports employees in cultivating self-awareness, building their understanding of trauma and stress responses, and integrating new practices that are healthy and sustainable. Our trauma-informed care workshop and experience will share definitions for a common language, offer an overall understanding about how the traumatized/stressed brain works, explore what trauma-Informed care is, explain why employees/employers should care, and learn how to apply these new practices through case-study presentations and activities.

Healthy boundaries + Self-Care

How we relate to ourselves has immediate implications in the we work do and ways we interact with others. Boundaries are the expression of these intrapersonal and interpersonal interactions. So, these dynamic structures are bound to show up in the workplace. This training will leave you with an overall understanding of boundaries. We will help you uncover ways boundaries play into job/life satisfaction and self-care. And then show you how to develop strategies to improve communication, stimulate collaboration, unpack conflict, and enhance your mental and social wellness.

Identifying burnout + creating sustainable practices

In this workshop we define and explore the effects and impact of employee burn-out.  We investigate how the brain is impacted by stress and the long-term impact stress can have on your emotional and mental wellness. We also illustrate indicators that you or your employees may be experiencing burnout and offer tactics to combat the effects. Additionally, we go into depth about the importance of self-care and community care—and what it means to promote it within your organization.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is such a buzzword these days, but what is it really? While researchers have not yet agreed on a single definition of mindfulness, it is understood to be the process of paying attention to what’s happening as it’s happening. In this workshop we explore the many definitions, applications, and benefits of mindfulness. We explore why we should care about mindfulness and how it relates to navigating and managing personal/communal stress and overwhelm. We also offer practical ways to integrate mindfulness into our busy lives.

Vicarious trauma training

In this training, we define vicarious trauma, discuss the signs of experiencing vicarious trauma, and then offer strategies that encourage effectively managing a demanding work environment and promote employee wellness. We discuss how a system itself can be traumatizing to its staff.  So we offer the space to air out toxic dynamics in the workplace and give you sustainable practices to support communication, collaboration, and client-delivery.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is how well we can manage our own emotions and the emotions of others. It is the ability to practice self-awareness by tuning into our own feelings and emotions. The key is to do this while also being aware of other people’s perspectives, emotions and feelings. When we notice where we are emotionally, we are able to notice it in others. In this session we will walk your staff through the practicing definitions within emotional awareness; help your staff understand their current relationship with their emotions, and learn how to deepen awareness about how they feel in order to anticipate and communicate their needs to others.

Crisis Management

Do your staff work with high-risk clients? Do they feel ill-prepared to deal or manage crises? This training will help break-down the impact of a crisis on the brain in order to better understand how to intervene and help things settle. We will offer specific strategies in working with people in crisis, maintaining personal safety and emotional regulation, and assessing for risk and safety.

Stress + The Brain Workshop

This is our bi-yearly workshop that we offer to anyone in the community for a discounted price. We sprinkle in information from: TIC 101 and Boundaries + Self-Care trainings. It is supportive to the individual, leadership working to develop healthier culture within an organization, or practitioners working support themselves or their clientele. Check out our shop to see when the next one is featured!

Conflict/Resolution

Human beings experience conflict on a daily basis. Overall, conflict is surrounded by negative assumptions, but we believe it can be used as a catalyst for learning and development. Exploring our own associations with conflict, identifying our own communication styles, and understanding how our learned cultural behaviors have benefited or prevented us in meeting our and others’ needs. We will guide participants in understanding their communication and conflict styles through interactive discussions and movement-based activities. Our hope is to invite deep and critical thought about how our identities inform and impact our communication style(s)/approach(es) to conflict. We will illustrate how no style is the right style; no strategy is the right strategy. We will model how to get our needs met, how to practice self-awareness in order to critically read situations, respond effectively, and learn how to ask the right questions in order to collaboratively problem solve.

OWNER, CONSULTANT

Bronwyn Hockersmith, MA, LPC

Bronwyn is the co-owner of Boost Counseling and Consulting. Bronwyn is passionate about making a workplace a space to thrive and create. During her time in the mental health field she has built community partnerships, developed wellness curriculum, led trauma-informed care initiatives, developed and instructed workshops, and educated community members in the power of addressing trauma/stress and promoting connection. Her passion for trauma-informed care came out of her years of experience working with and within a multitude of human service organizations—residential treatment centers, managed care corporations, community mental health centers, and non-profit organizations.  Within each work environment, she observed—and experienced—the pervasive and destructive impact trauma, burnout, and stress could have on both the staff and clients alike.  Bronwyn has thus become a true champion for trauma-informed care as she has witnessed the powerful and positive impact it has had on turnover rates, job satisfaction, client and staff wellness, and systemic sustainability for organizations who carry out the principles with their staff and the work they do. Bronwyn's approach encourages curiosity, stimulates organizational healing, restores motivation, and promotes self-awareness.

Katie Herrmann

CONSULTANT

Katie Herrmann, MSW, LCSW

With her 30 years of experience, Katie has demonstrated direct leadership experience in program development and implementation of behavioral health programming. She has worked extensively with the state behavioral health systems including both Colorado Mental Health Institutes, all 17 community mental health centers in Colorado, the Department of Healthcare Policy and financing as well as other systems within the state serving children and developmental disabilities. Katie’s passion in the behavioral and human services world lies with the promotion of access to care, the elimination of stigma, the promotion of peer services and trauma-informed care. Over the past four years Katie has worked ardently to promote the person-centered approach in behavioral health through the implementation of statewide person-centered trainings, overseeing the transition of individuals out of the state institutes and overseeing institute and community Peer Services throughout the state. Through her extensive work in quality improvement, program development and direct supervision she has directly observed the toll and direct impact that institute and systems trauma has taken not only on the clients those systems are in place to serve but also the toll that the workers within those systems endure.  Katie has developed a keen interest in examining the impact that institutional and systems trauma has on the clients those systems serve but also on the workers within those systems. Through that examination, Katie’s goal is to work with the systems and institutions to find solutions to identify, combat and recover from the trauma and thusly restore them to a healthy, functioning operation which will ultimately translate to better service to those served.
